PAT Testing falls into 2 categories

Portable Appliance
This is where an appliance is fitted with a plug, which can easily be plugged into a Pat Tester to carry out the required electrical tests. This includes standard 3 pin plugs. We can test any type of appliance which has a plug, from the small 2 amp 3 pin right through 110v (yellow commando plug), 220 (blue commando plug) upto 3 phase (red plug).

Fixed Appliances
This category of appliance is where it has no plug fitted and is wired directly into an outlet. This category is often forgot about and neglected. It falls into what can be " A grey area of testing ".
Most Pat Testers don't test these appliances because there is no plug and say that it is the responsibility of the electrician as it is part of the electrical installation. The electrician will then say it is not his responsibility either, as it is after the outlet socket and hence doesn't fall under the electrical installation.
Never the less the appliance is required to be tested. The process involved in testing this type of appliance is more complex as it requires The Safe Isolation of Power Supply process to both disconnect the appliance and reconect after testing
