Emergency Lighting

Self Contained Systems
This is the most common for small to medium businesses. The back up battery is contained within or beside the emergency light fitting. This category can also be divided into 2 sub categories, Manual test systems where the lighting ha sto be turned on manually to be tested. Automatic test systems, where the light fitting performs its own pre-determined tests. Both systems require servicing and testing but to different levels.

Central Battery Systems
As the name suggests, there is a single battery which is located in a separate part of the building, which supplies power to all emergency fittings in the event of a power failure. This is more common in larger buildings.
